Faced with the wraith of the Rune Dragon Despayr when you entered his domain seeking the return of Starbreaker, doom has befallen you. Between breath weapons from the young black dragons accompanying Despayr and the bold attacks from the rune dragon himself, several of you have fallen.
You do notice the room perimeter containing iron cages containing human prisoners wracked in pain and screaming out. You are helpless to save them or Starbreaker as you notice the black mass in the center of the room wreathed in bright white light. Captian Furthak realizes that he has no mental contact with the orb upon the Brightstar but suspects the orb to be near. As you all realize the second b young black dragon is an illusion, the captain attempts to use his magic towards the black mass.
A blast of magical energy comes forth. Be this mass a portal to Shar herself or an evil force for some purpose or ability is not known to you. But the next thing you do know is the entire party is standing in a dark stone passage 10 foot by 10 foot leading in to darkness in either direction. Pick goes off to search it out as the rest of the group heal and try to get their bearings. Divine magic here in this darkened place is unchanged but arcane magic has a broken connection and cannot be replenished. Sariel discovers the unholy symbol of Shar she had taken and kept, is pulsing with energy. Taking time to identify, Sariel finds that bonding and aligning with the symbol gives you access to replenish arcane magic though Shar’s divine power.
Picks finds an exit in both directions down this tunnel. Each leads to a vast darkened space high up a mountain side looking out into a darkened valley a couple hundred feet below. Dimly viewing across these valleys reveals trees and dense foliage with one valley having dim lights, possibly camp fires dotted across the valley floor while the other contains a huge spired fortress out in the dim distance. A history check possibly identifies this structure as Shar’s fortress of darkness located on the demi shadow plane of her imprisonment. This is all discovered while resting is taking place for those needing it. Captain Furthak decides to bond with the unholy symbol of Shar and regain his spells. Draven rests normally as does Sariel and Starbreaker.
As the rest is finished, Captain Furthak’s alignment has changed to Chaotic Evil as he regains his spells through the power of Shar. At that moment, Pick sheds his disguise he has burdened himself with for some time and shows his true colors. Pick reveals his true for as a devil with tail, bat-like wings and vicious teeth. And at that moment, Bruenor outwardly decides to place the mark of Shar upon his warhammer and claim her as his deity. With an alignment change he stuns Starbreaker, Draven and Sariel as the party has been split down the middle by alignment. But that is not all,Pick then pick-pockets one of the Shadow Shards from Draven (who discovers it missing later) as Furthak, Pick and Bruenor announce their intension to deliver the Shadow Shard to Shar herself to show their allegiance to her darkness.
Once ready, the group moves out of the tunnel towards Shar’s fortress and makes their way down the 200 foot climb. Draven looking for strength and protection seeks out corpses to animate as you move out into the dark woods and come upon a tree with bodies hanging from its branches. As he moves closer, the tree attacks. Battle is short as you communicate with the tree and avoid any major fighting. Moving beyond deeper into the dense dark woods you come across a caravan of creatures and wagons moving across you path before you…
